The Other Side of the Moon is an area in which three trails of stone enchantment intertwine, offering exquisite views of the mythical Croatian massif Velebit, the azure sea, bare stone crags and the blue sky. Each of these trails has its own story, a series of intriguing details from Pag’s history and unique stone vistas that could have only been shaped by nature. If you set off on any trail, you are guaranteed enjoyment and relaxation, because the trails pass by Ledenik, the loveliest and most interesting geological and paleontological zone on the island of Pag, and possibly unique in the entire Mediterranean.

The Other Side of the Moon is something that you’ll find nowhere else, except perhaps on the Earth’s actual Moon.

The Sveti Jure (St. George) Trail is demanding, but when you complete it you feel immeasurably satisfied, because it is in an exquisite and pristine landscape, with fantastic views from several vistas on its route.

The trail starts on the macadam surface below Lokva, near Ledenik, with a view of stacked stone walls as witnesses to the history in which Pag abounds, and passes by vantage points that offer views of the Pag Strait, Malin, Sušac and Slana Cove. There is also a pyramidal stone structure which is presumed to date back to Antiquity and which was used for signalling purposes. From this point, there is a wonderful view of the Pag Strait and the heart-shaped islet Maškalic.

You soon come to a structure that is much closer to our modern times, an observation post and a brick-and-mortar building for a military contingent in the Second World War that served to oversee the Velebit Channel and the entrance to the Pag Strait.

You then arrive at the place where there was a large Byzantine fortification in the 6th century, a complex that also encompassed the Church of St. George. The remains of the church and a water cistern a short distance away are still visible even today.

Buljanovića Stanovi, the remains of several stone cottages and barns, are a little farther onward. They lucidly demonstrate how people lived on Pag in times past, when sheep farming was the basis of their existence.

A multitude of thirty million year-old fossils are visible along the entire trail.

The Sveti Jure Trail will provide you with an unforgettable and unusual trip through Pag’s history, with many unique views, an abundance of colours, simple man-made structures and the play of nature with which Pag is so richly endowed.
