TRAIL DIFFICULTY
- easy
SUGGESTED TYPE OF BICYCLE
- gravel, MTB, trekking
Riding down St. Anthony’s family track is a special experience. Located in the green ring of the field of Novaljsko Polje, it is speckled with vineyards, olive groves and green pastures where you won’t miss seeing our native favourite – the Pag sheep. This easy route is ideal for families, older adults and less skilled cyclists, meandering down asphalt, gravel, dirt and stone paths.
The track starts and ends by the little St. Anthony’s (the Hermit) Church in Novaljsko Polje, where it got its name from. The temperate surroundings of green pastures and aromatic scents of flowering medicinal plants are complemented by the soft murmur of the drinking water spring that irrigates the puddle covered in reed. This is the hiding place of various bird species, as well as many amphibians such as frogs, sea turtles, eels and other varieties of fauna.
. On the first turn you will reach a macadam path lining a vineyard. If you stop for a short while and look around, you will see that the view extends to the entire Old Novalja and the bay, prompting your first photo opportunity.
The ride continues through a typical coastal landscape marked by plots of land enclosed by dry stone walls, or as the locals call it “ogradice” (small fences). The so-called ogradice are intended for protection of domestic animals and the cultivation of traditional agricultural crops. This is why one should be mindful of always closing and not damaging the fencing or the doors.
Our ride on a predominantly gravel road takes us to a paved main road in Novaljsko Polje that brings us back to our starting point at St. Anthony’s Church.
